Párizs a világ számos nagyvárosának szolgált ihletadóul: Buda, Pest és Óbuda 1873-as, Budapestté való összeforrásakor az ország vezetői már hosszú ideje égtek a tettvágytól, hogy a francia főváros egy darabja itthon is megidézhető legyen, a munkák azonban nem úgy haladtak, ahogyan azt megálmodták.
Az ötlet három évtizeddel korábban, Kossuth fejéből pattant ki, aki már 1841-ben, a Pesti Hírlapban közzétett írásában azt javasolta, hogy Pesten az akkor még épp csak építeni kezdett Lánchidat (1840-1849) egy fasorral szegélyezett széles sugárút kösse össze a világ első igazi közparkjával, a Városligettel.
Az álom végül közel harminc évvel később, 1870-ben indult el a valóra válás felé, a képviselőház karácsony előtt röviddel ugyanis zöld utat adott az Andrássy út terveinek, sőt, egy méretes összeget is adott a fővárosnak, hogy felvásárolhassa a számos esetben kerteknek, mocsaras területeknek, illetve egy rossz hírű késdobálónak is otthont adó földdarabokat.
A Sugárút munkálatai ennek köszönhetően 1871-ben el is indultak, a folyamatot azonban a nagyszámú bontás, illetve egy gazdasági válság is hátráltatta, így a telekvásárlási kedv sokáig alacsony maradt, a vevők pedig sokszor vissza is adták a hosszú töprengés után megvett tulajdonukat, hiszen nem tudták vállalni, hogy az adásvételi szerződés megvásárlása után öt éven belül fel is építik a tervezett villájukat, vagy társasházukat. A kialakult helyzetet végül nem a pénzügyi befektetők, hanem a főurak oldották meg, akik az Andrássy út Hősök tere felőli végén fényűző otthonokat emeltek, a mai Erzsébet tér felé haladva pedig sorra születtek meg a gyárosok, illetve gazdag vállalkozók nem ritkán hét-nyolc szobás lakásokat rejtő bérpalotái.
Az eleinte fakockával burkolt Sugár-út megnyitására végül 1876. augusztus 20-ig kellett várni, az utolsó foghíjat azonban csak 1885-re sikerült beépíteni – az útvonal végül ekkor kapta meg a mai nevét: egy korábbi miniszterelnök, idősebb Andrássy Gyula nevét vette fel.
A kontinens első földalatti vasútjának kedvéért 1896-ban megbolygatott Andrássy út képe a századforduló óta rengeteget változott: ezeket mutatja be az Animatiqua és a 24.hu közös Régi épületek meséi-sorozatának második darabja, a Kőtengerből a tündérkertbe.
A másfél perces, állóképek számtalan munkaórával való megmozgatásából született anyagnak minden egyes képe magáért beszél, bemutatva egy olyan fényűző utcát, aminek jó részére ma már rá se ismernénk.
Kitűnő példa erre a sugárút nyitányánál, a Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út sarkán álló Fonçière-palota (ép. Feszty Adolf, 1882), aminek kupolája a második világháború utáni romeltakarítás során eltűnt, azt egykor díszítő két sárkánya, illetve Hermész-szobra azonban továbbra is a helyén áll, csak éppen néhány méterrel közelebb költözött a járdaszinthez.
Az anyagban ezek mellett több, ma már szintén nem látható kupolára, toronyra, illetve épületdíszre figyelhetünk fel, amik jól mutatják, hogy a Király utcát sokáig főútjának tartó kisváros hirtelen a mérhetetlen luxus és gazdagság képét kezdte sugározni magáról.
A képsorokban találkozhatunk a ma leginkább Balettintézetként emlegetett Drechsler-palotával, az Operaházzal, a Kodály körönd eredeti arcával, sőt, a Dózsa György út és az Andrássy út sarkánál a környezetét figyelő Babocsay-házzal is, amit Árkay Aladár 1906-ban szecessziós arccal álmodott meg, azt azonban később annyi kritika érte, hogy építtető-tulajdonosa 1926-ban a modernizmus egyik apostolával, Kozma Lajossal terveztetett át.
A rövid film történetgombolyaga aztán végül a tündérkertként emlegetett Városligetben ér véget, búcsúzóul pedig vethetünk egy pillantást a Műjégpálya részben fából született, – később a magyaros szecesszió atyjaként az Iparművészeti Múzeumot is jegyző Lechner Ödön tehetségét dícsérő – korábbi épületére (1876), valamint a grandiózus kastélyokra emlékeztető Széchenyi fürdőre (ép. Czigler Győző, 1909-1913, bővítés: ifj.
