Korábban ismeretlen részleteket derítettek fel a maja emberáldozatokkal kapcsolatban – írja az MTI egy új tanulmányra hivatkozva. A nemzetközi kutatócsoport szerint a nép eredetmítoszaival hozhatók kapcsolatba a véres rítusok.
A tanulmány elkészítéséhez 64 gyermek maradványainak DNS-mintáit vizsgálták meg, akiket Chichén Itza ősi városában, a mai Mexikó területén temettek el. Többségük három és hat év közötti kisfiúk voltak, akik közeli rokoni kapcsolatban álltak egymással, két egypetéjű ikerpár is volt közöttük.
Ez bizonyítja, hogy tévesek azok a 20. századi beszámolók, amelyek szerint a maják fiatal nőket és lányokat áldoztak fel. A felfedezés arról árulkodik, hogy a szertartásokhoz fiúgyermekeket választottak ki, méghozzá párosával.
A vizsgálat szerint a gyermekeket mintegy 500 év leforgása alatt áldozták fel, többségüket Chichén Itza fénykorában, Krisztus után 800 és 1000 között. A kutatók kiemelték, , hogy első alkalommal azonosítottak ikreket ősi maja rituális temetkezés maradványainak feltárásán. Az ikreknek viszont feltehetőleg nagy jelentősége volt, ugyanis kapcsolatban lehetnek a maja eredetmítoszokat leíró Popol Vuhban olvasható mítosszal a hős ikrekről, akikből a Nap és a Hold formálódott.
A tudósok szerint elemzésük eredményei segítenek megérteni a rituális áldozatok, valamint a maja szent szövegekben szereplő halál és újjászületés ciklusai közötti mély összefüggéseket.
