A Financial Times értesülései szerint egyezség születhetett Orbán Viktor és a leköszönhő holland kormányfő, Mark Rutte között utóbbi NATO-főtitkári ambícióival kapsolatban.
Rutte megcélozta a katonai szövetség legmagasabb pozícióját, amit a magyar kormány eddig kategorikausan nem támogatott. Szijjártó Péter külgazdasági és külügyminiszter például úgy nyilatkozott róla még májusban, hogy „természetesen nem tudjuk támogatni olyan ember megválasztását a NATO főtitkári posztjára, aki korábban térdre akarta kényszeríteni Magyarországot” – utalva ezzel arra, hogy Rutte korábban tett olyan kijelentést, hogy Magyarországnak már nincs helye az EU-ban.
A kormány nem csak emiatt, de azért sem támogatta eddig Ruttét, mert a kormány nem támogat semmilyen olyan intézkedést, amely a háborús eszkaláció veszélyét még inkább növelné. A FT információi szerint most azonban Rutte ígéretet tett arra, hogy megválasztása esetén kihagyja majd Magyarországot az Ukrajnát támogató NATO-tevékenységekből. Az ATV rákérdezett a miniszterelnök sajtófőnökénél arra, hogy hitelesek-e ezek az információk, de Havasi Bertalan csak annyit közölt, hogy a tárgyalások folyamatban vannak.
A Reuters értesülései szerint viszont Magyarország már nemcsak, hogy nem ellenzi Rutte NATO-főtitkári kinevezését, de már bocsánatkérésre sem tart igényt a holland politikus korábbi kijelentései miatt.
