Social audio app Wisdom picks up £1.5m funding

UK-based Wisdom, a social audio app, has picked up $2m (£1.5m) in a seed funding round led by First Round Capital along with a slew of angel investors.

The investment will be used to build a roadmap of features, such as those focused on boosting community engagement.

Founded by Dayo Akinrinade, Wisdom provides a platform for one-to-one style conversations with a focus on mentoring. It has launched a new mentorship marketplace that has been described as a mix between Clubhouse and MasterClass. The company claims that its platform is popular among podcasters.

The company launched its iOS app in October this year. It also has an Android app, which is slated to be released in early 2022. Some 150,000 people have joined the platform since its launch and hundreds of users sign up on a daily basis.

Popular topics on Wisdom include mindfulness and social media. On the influencer side, it includes musician Kenny G, baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor “Spike” James Marsters as its early contributors.

“The funding and expertise of our new investors will enable us to nurture and grow this extraordinary community,” said Wisdom founder Dayo Akinrinade.

In a statement, First Round Capital said: “We believe social audio is in its infancy, and it has been great to join Dayo [Akinrinade, Wisdom’s founder and CEO] and witness firsthand her vision for Wisdom. Wisdom taps into some important trends, from social audio to algorithm-friendly design — all while reflecting just how powerful and impactful communities that feature a range of voices can be — helping to give diverse and overlooked people access to high quality mentorship.”
