Tech giant Google and 11 UK employers including the likes of the BBC, BT Group, Deloitte, John Lewis Partnership and NatWest have come together to form an employer consortium.
The employer consortium will acknowledge Google Career Certificates, considering people who complete them for relevant tech jobs.
Google is also providing 10,000 more scholarships, partnering with groups such as the Department for Work and Pensions, Prince’s Trust and the National Autistic Society to help people get jobs in the digital sector.
It was announced at an event during London Tech Week with the Secretary of State for Education, Nadhim Zahawi.
Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said: “The tech sector will play a pivotal role in our future economy – and this Government is investing £3.8 billion in England over this parliament to ensure businesses have access to the skills and talent they need to continue to thrive.”
Google’s certifications are considered the equivalent of a standard level 4 qualification, they cover data analytics, digital marketing, IT support, project management, and user experience design.
The courses are accessible by the online learning platform Coursera and last between three to six months to finish.
“We hope more businesses from across the UK will join us in the Consortium and look forward to continuing to help UK jobseekers succeed,” said Ruth Porat, SVP and CFO, Google and Alphabet.
According to Google, since launching the certificates in the UK last year 78% of graduates have said that it had an impact on their career.
Earlier this week Google revealed the 40 black-led tech startups from Europe that will receive investment from its £3m Black Founders Fund, with 26 of the startups being based in the UK.
While last month saw Google have an investigation launched by the UK’s competition watchdog over online ad dominance and face a lawsuit over DeepMind’s NHS data use.
