Thalamos raises £900k seed funding to speed up mental health support

Medtech startup Thalamos has raised £900,000 in seed funding to help those sectioned under the Mental Health Act to receive care faster.

Cousins Arden and Ross Tomison came up with the idea for Thalamos after their friend was sectioned. Before the friend could be seen they had to fill out “countless paper forms”, in what the cousins say was a lengthy process.

Founded in 2018, Thalamos aims to digitise this process so that patients can be seen and looked after sooner.

Arden Tomison, founder of Thalamos, said: “The completion of Mental Health Act forms is an essential legal process that ensures patients receive the right treatment, safely; but no-one should have to wait for care when in crisis.”

More than 40,000 practitioners across seven mental health care providers are using the platform, according to the medtech startup.

Its seed round drew investment from Ascension’s Conduit Impact EIS Fund, a closed Seedrs crowdfund and Syndicate Room, amongst others.

Hadley Diest, an investment manager at Ascension, is joining the board of Thalamos as an independent advisor.

“Thalamos’ groundbreaking digital workflow tool enables those involved in patient intake, treatment, discharge and ongoing support to work together more seamlessly than ever before, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and more efficient collaboration between the NHS, police, care providers and regulators,” said Diest.

Based in London, the seed funding will be used for hiring and improving Thalamos’ platform.

Thalamos was one of 10 chosen by the NHS for its Innovation Accelerator in April, which allows it to be used more widely across the health service.

It follows a flurry of recent UK digital health funding rounds. PsycApps this week raised £1.5m in seed funding for its ‘gamified’ mental health platform. Fellow medtech Neurofenix raised £6m for its sensor-based hardware used for stroke rehab.
