Cerbos lands £6m investment for code-checking software

Software as a service (SaaS) startup Cerbos has landed $7.5m (£6m) in an extended seed round led by venture capital firm OMERS Ventures.

London-headquartered Cerbos’ software is used by developers and programmers to conduct authorisation checks on code.

Torsten Volk, managing research director at Enterprise Management Associates, said: “Writing and managing repetitive code for the ‘plumbing’ of their software is the bane of most developers’ existence.

“In the case of authorisation code, the resulting inconsistencies and errors can also negatively affect the sleep cycles of CIOs, CTOs, CCOs and CSOs when the time of an audit rolls around.”

Cerbos CEO Emre Baran and CTO Charith Ellawala founded the company in 2021 after working together at Qubit, where they both were responsible for coding its data infrastructure.

Engin Attar, co-founder at Cerbos client Debite, said: “If it wasn’t for Cerbos, one thing is for sure – we would have launched later than we did. As a result, we would have less customers.

London-based Debite launched last May with a £2.5m pre-seed round led by Crane.

OMERS Ventures was joined in its investment by Chime’s co-founder and CTO Ryan King, ex CMO of Palo Alto Networks Zeynep Inanoglu Ozdemir, former GitHub engineer Zach Holman, Zach Lloyd founder and CEO of Warp as well as Brevan Howard Digital CTO Lewis Tuff.

Cerbos’s seed follows a £2.6m investment in 2021 and brings total funding to $11m (£8.8). Along with the raise, Cerbos is launching its cloud offering.
