Calendar app Onin raises £2.75m seed

The co-founder behind Muslim dating app Muzz has raised £2.75m in seed funding for his latest venture: a calendar app called Onin.

The London-based software company has developed a keyboard extension that lets users check their calendar, create events and invite people without having to leave their messaging app.

Ryan Brodie, founder and CEO, Onin, said: “Calendars live outside the conversations that drive them and weren’t designed for the social lives we live today.”

Founded in 2020, the app’s seed round was led by Octopus Ventures. The calendar app startup will spend the seed investment on hiring in engineering, product and marketing.

In the future, Onin said it is open to expanding into payments and bookings for smaller businesses. According to the company, it has 40 pending patents protecting its app.

“Today, services like WhatsApp are used beyond checking in with our family and friends,” said Karan Mehta, an early-stage investor at Octopus Ventures.

“We use these apps to manage multiple aspects of our personal and professional lives – but the calendar is missing and causing friction. Onin elegantly solves this problem.”

Onin has previously raised £750,000 in pre-seed capital from Brodie, Hambro Perks and Entrepreneur First’s Matt Clifford among others, with total funding standing at £3.5m.
