Az íróként és társadalmi aktivistaként is ismert Naomi Klein a Női Irodalmi Díj (Women’s Prize) idén először átadott, tényirodalmi műért járó díját kapta a Doppelganger című kötetéért, amelyben személyes tapasztalatait osztotta meg az online félretájékoztatás világáról.
A szépirodalmi művek kategóriájában V.V Ganeshananthan amerikai írónő Brotherless Night című regényét díjazták, amely egy polgárháború által szétszakított család történetét mutatja be Srí Lankában. A díjazottak 30-30 ezer fontos pénzjutalomban is részesültek.
Suzannah Lipscomb történész, aki a nem fikciós kategória zsűrijét vezette, Klein könyvét „bátor, humánus és optimista felhívásnak nevezte, amely arra késztet, hogy ne a fekete-fehér vagy jobb- és baloldali szempontok vezéreljenek bennünket”. Klein, aki megköszönte, hogy a „díj nem akart konfliktuskerülő lenni”, korábban arra szólította fel a könyvfesztiválokat, hogy ne fogadjanak el pénzt olyan cégektől, amelyek fosszilis tüzelőanyagokba vagy az izraeli védelmi ágazatba fektetnek be, és a kampánynak köszönhetően a brit rendezvények lemondtak a Baillie Gifford pénzügyi cég támogatásáról.
Ganeshananthan második regénye csaknem két évtized alatt készült el. Monica Ali regényíró, a szépirodalmi zsűri elnöke a Brotherless Nightot briliáns, megával ragadó és mélyen megindító regénynek nevezte, amely szemtanúként számol be az a Srí Lanka-i polgárháború személyes és drámai léptékű tragédiáiról.
A Women’s Prize irodalmi díjat 1996-ban alapították, korábbi nyertesei között volt Zadie Smith, Tayari Jones és Barbara Kingsolver. A tényirodalmi kategóriát idén azért vezették be, hogy ellensúlyozzák vele a könyvkiadás világában tapasztalható nemi egyenlőtlenséget, ami abban nyilvánul meg, hogy a férfiak több nem fikciós könyvet vesznek, mint a nők, és a nem fikciós könyvekért járó díjakat is zömmel férfi szerzők kapják.
A díj szervezői szerint 2022-ben azoknak a nem fikciós könyveknek, amelyeket a brit lapokban bemutattak, csak 26,5 százalékát írták nők, és az ilyen művekért járó díjakat is főleg férfiak kapták.
